Bruges (or Brugge in Flemish) is our favorite city in Belgium. While its incredible beauty draws many tourists, that shouldn’t deter you from visiting—Bruges truly lives up to its reputation.

The Perfect One Day in Bruges Itinerary
Start your day at Market Square (Markt).
Bruges’ Markt is a vibrant and colorful town square.
You’ll see horse-drawn carriages lined up toward the center, frites stands offering delicious snacks, and if you visit in December, you’ll experience one of Bruges’ renowned Christmas markets.
Climb the Belfry for great views of Bruges.
Before leaving the Markt, climb 366 steps to the top of the Belfry.
Tickets are 14 Euros as of this writing. If you’re trying to capture a photo of the Belfry from below, you might notice it’s slightly tilted to the east.
Stroll over to the Bruges City Hall
Built in the 15th century in a late-Gothic style, Bruges City Hall is an architectural gem. Since it’s so close to the Markt and the next stop on this itinerary, it’s worth a quick photo stop!
Step inside the Basilica of Holy Blood
Located in Burg Square next to Bruges City Hall, the Basilica of Holy Blood might be easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there.
The basilica has two chapels: a Romanesque lower chapel and a neo-Gothic upper chapel. The upper chapel houses a relic said to contain the blood of Christ.
Take a canal cruise
Bruges’ canals are stunning, and there’s no better way to experience them than from the water. Hop on a canal cruise for a brief history of the city and beautiful views, including the famous Quay of the Rosary.
Meander through Bruges’ streets
After your canal cruise, spend some time wandering the picturesque streets of Bruges’ Old Town.
Be sure to stop for lunch, and perhaps some Belgian frites or chocolate. Keep an eye out for chocolate shops and lace sellers, and consider picking up a souvenir as you explore.
Make your way to St. Salvator’s Cathedral
Dating back to the 10th century (though with significant renovations over the years), this beautiful cathedral is worth a quick visit during your day in Bruges.
Pay a visit to the Groeninge museum
Known for its collection of Flemish primitives, Bruges’ premier art museum features an impressive array of Belgian art through the ages and makes an excellent afternoon stop.
Snap photos at Bonifacius Bridge
Located near the Groeningemuseum, Bonifacius Bridge and the adjacent Arents courtyard are some of Bruges’ most photogenic spots. Though the bridge was built in the 20th century, it blends seamlessly with the city’s historic charm.
Stop by the Church of Our Lady
Near Bonifacius Bridge, the Church of Our Lady is one of Bruges’ most notable churches. It’s home to a striking Madonna and Child sculpture by Michelangelo, completed in 1504. The church is also the final resting place of Charles the Bold and his daughter, Mary.
Head over to Minnewater Lake
A stroll to Minnewater Lake takes you along Bruges’ lovely canals before arriving at the peaceful lake. Also known as the Lake of Love, it’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view, especially the beautiful swans that inhabit the park.
If you’re visiting Bruges on a day trip, ending your day at Minnewater Lake puts you close to the train station. If you’re spending the night, you’ll be ready to enjoy a hearty Belgian dinner—be sure to try one of Belgium’s famous beers!

Getting Around During a Day in Bruges
This one-day Bruges itinerary is designed to be entirely walkable!
If you prefer, you can spend the entire day on foot, including getting to and from the Bruges train station. The train station is about a 20-minute walk from Market Square, and most of the walk is quite charming.
More Than One Day in Bruges, Belgium?
If you have more than one day in Bruges, there are plenty more things to do!
Consider visiting Bruges’ windmills, exploring quirky museums like the Frite Museum and Beer Wall, and indulging in more chocolate (or even taking a chocolate workshop).
Of course, with more than a day, you can also take day trips to nearby cities like Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, and the WWI battlefields near Ypres.
Tips for Seeing Bruges in a Day
Spend the night if you can
While you can see a lot on a day trip to Bruges, spending the night lets you experience the city at its best (and least crowded) in the early morning and evening.
Consider taking a “free” walking tour
With only one day in Bruges, you might miss some of the city’s hidden stories—but a “free” walking tour can help you uncover quite a few!
We enjoyed the walking tour we took on our first trip to Bruges and learned a lot about the city.
While the tours are advertised as “free,” they rely on tips for payment, so be sure to compensate your guide for their time!
If you prefer a traditional walking tour with a set price, this one gets excellent reviews and includes a canal cruise.

Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two Irish hitmen hiding out in Bruges, the 2008 dark comedy features plenty of scenes showcasing the city’s beauty. If you watch In Bruges before your trip, you’ll likely recognize a few filming locations as you explore!
