Nestled within the archaeological site of Roca Vecchia, just a short drive from Otranto or Lecce, the Cave of Poetry is an incredible place to explore.

What’s it Like to Visit the Cave of Poetry?
Swimming in the Cave of Poetry in Puglia is an unforgettable experience—and it can even include a thrilling dose of adrenaline if you choose!
While swimming is the primary attraction, both locals and tourists also engage in some impressive cliff jumping!
As someone who isn’t fond of heights, I opted to skip this part of the Cave of Poetry experience and instead relished the beautiful waters.
Beyond the main pool, there’s a short cave you can swim through, where you’ll encounter the point where the natural pool and the sea converge.
There are also whispers of a few “secret beaches” at Grotta della Poesia—we didn’t discover these ourselves, but if you’re feeling adventurous, ask some locals during your visit!
Depending on your love for swimming, you could spend less than an hour or the entire day at the pool.
Tips for Visiting the Cave of Poetry in Puglia, Italy
Watch your step!
To access the Grotta della Poesia, you have two choices: jump off the cliff’s edge or navigate a narrow, slippery staircase carved into the rock.
We chose the latter, but be careful—slipping here would be easy.
At the bottom of the staircase, a large boulder serves as a spot where many visitors leave their belongings before easing into the crystal-clear waters.
Bring cash
It’s worth mentioning that in this rural part of southern Italy, having cash on hand is essential, especially small coins.
You’ll need it for both the entrance fee and parking.
Be prepared for a (short) walk
After paying the entrance fee, a short walk over a rocky, unshaded landscape will lead you to the pool.
The views, showcasing both the coastline and the archaeological ruins of Roca Vecchia, are breathtaking.
Though it’s a short walk, you’ll want to wear shoes that protect your feet, as walking barefoot is uncomfortable on the rough terrain.
Use your best judgment
Cliff jumping is a popular activity here, but it does come with risks.
If you decide to jump, exercise caution, always ensure there are no swimmers below before you leap, and follow the locals’ lead to find the safest spots.
Stroll along the perimeter for excellent views
Once you’ve enjoyed your swim, take a moment to stroll around the top of Grotta della Poesia.
The views from above are spectacular, and you can capture some beautiful photos that truly represent your visit.
While you’re up there, consider exploring more of the onsite archaeological ruins.
Don’t forget your sunscreen
With little to no shade at the Cave of Poetry, sunburns are a real threat.
Applying sunscreen is a must when visiting!
Make sure to look up as you swim!
Though cliff jumpers are generally careful to ensure no one is below before jumping, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings while swimming.
That includes keeping an eye on what’s happening above!
Keep crowds in mind during the summer
The Grotta della Poesia is extremely popular, especially during July and August, which means it can get quite crowded!
June and September are the best times to visit, with warm water and fewer crowds.
We visited in June, and while the pool was busy, it was manageable—everyone had plenty of space to enjoy themselves.
If you’re visiting during peak season, consider arriving early in the morning to experience the Cave of Poetry without the crowds.
Logistical Information for Visiting the Grotta della Poesia
- To visit the Cave of Poetry in Italy, you’ll need to pay an entrance fee of 3 Euro per person (in cash).
- A parking lot, marked on Google Maps, is located a short walk from the entrance to the swimming area.
- Parking is paid, and it’s wise to bring cash for this as well (when we visited, the machine didn’t accept our credit card).
- As of the time of writing, parking at the Cave of Poetry costs 1.80 Euro per hour.
- The area around Grotta della Poesia doesn’t have many businesses, but there is a bar and a few snack stands a short walk from the entrance, at least during the summer.
- Once you pay your entrance fee and enter the Cave of Poetry area, there’s no opportunity to buy supplies, so pack some snacks if you plan to stay a while!
What to Bring to the Cave of Poetry, Italy
- There’s no specific place to store your belongings while swimming in the Cave of Poetry, so it’s best to bring as little as possible.
- Most visitors leave their things around the edges of the pool, relying on their travel companions to keep an eye on them.
- However, you’ll definitely want to bring sunscreen, water, a cover-up, and possibly a sunhat.
- There’s virtually no shade at Grotta della Poesia, so sun protection is crucial!
- If you have sensitive feet, water shoes might be helpful—the rocks can be sharp as you climb down into the pool or walk along the edge.
- Just be sure to keep a close eye on your phone, which most people manage by alternating swimming with friends or family.
- A dry bag can also help you bring your phone into the water with you.
- We also enjoyed having our swim goggles, allowing us to fully appreciate the underwater scenery!
